SmartScan did not lead to a real solution, see my post dated November 25. This should, I think, not have been due to the big volume of data, .i.e. emails from 2010 onwards. Both Normal scan and Smart scan (tried after Normal scan) stopped working in late 2011, i.e. after 3 to 4 hours of recovering pst-datafiles. It mainly took so long I guess because -say- 99% consisted of long deleted e-mails. I could see those on screen (headings, addresses).
ScanPST (scanpst.exe) is the Outlook Inbox Repair Tool designed to verify Outlook PST files for integrity errors. Earlier Outlook versions let you access ScanPST easily through the Outlook / Office Diagnostics feature, but Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 make it harder for you to manually run the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe).
Maybe the three popular recovery tools mentioned by Palcouk on Nov . 25 would have worked better (just a pity that I had not heard about them a little earlier !). And I still could not start Outlook (2007).
Therefore I put my Pc into the hands of an expert on software and he reported that my data files were a mess and/or corrupted. I think this was overdone, because the problems came almost unexpectedly and a new hard disk was installed appr. a year ago. Moreover Outlook 2007 was installed again.
Anyway, this expert installed a newer Outlook version and (nearly) everything seems to be OK now. But though all my pst-data files have been saved (on external disk) I have no access to old e-mails anymore. As said, PstScan did show on screen that they still exist. This loss is generally speaking not really a very great loss. That is because important attachments have been saved on several local disks and on external disks.

What Are EXE Files?
EXE ('executable') files, such as SCANPST.EXE, are files that contain step-by-step instructions that a computer follows to carry out a function. When you 'double-click' an EXE file, your computer automatically executes these instructions designed by a software developer (eg. Microsoft) to run a program (eg. Microsoft Developer Network Office Test Platform-INTL) on your PC.
Every software application on your PC uses an executable file - your web browser, word processor, spreadsheet program, etc. - making it one of the most useful kinds of files in the Windows operating system. Without executable files like SCANPST.EXE, you wouldn't be able to use any programs on your PC.
Why Do I Have EXE Errors?
Because of their usefulness and ubiquity, EXE files are commonly used as a method of delivery for virus / malware infection. Often, viruses will be disguised as a benign EXE file (such as SCANPST.EXE) and distributed through SPAM email or malicious websites, which can then infect your computer when executed (eg. when you double-click the EXE file).
In addition, viruses can infect, replace, or corrupt existing EXE files, which can then lead to error messages when Microsoft Developer Network Office Test Platform-INTL or related programs are executed. Thus, any executable files that you download to your PC should be scanned for viruses before opening - even if you think it is from a reputable source.
When Do EXE Errors Occur?
EXE errors, such as those associated with SCANPST.EXE, most often occur during computer startup, program startup, or while trying to use a specific function in your program (eg. printing).

Common SCANPST.EXE Error Messages
The most common SCANPST.EXE errors that can appear on a Windows-based computer are:
- 'SCANPST.EXE Application Error.'
- 'SCANPST.EXE is not a valid Win32 application.'
- 'SCANPST.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.'
- 'Cannot find SCANPST.EXE.'
- 'SCANPST.EXE not found.'

These EXE error messages can appear during program installation, while a SCANPST.EXE-related software program (eg. Microsoft Developer Network Office Test Platform-INTL) is running, during Windows startup or shutdown, or even during the installation of the Windows operating system. Keeping track of when and where your SCANPST.EXE error occurs is a critical piece of information in troubleshooting the problem.
